Put Your Skills to Work for Mother Earth!

Volunteers are the figurative “Wind beneath our Wings.” Our crucial Conservation Mission takes flight with the help of volunteers whose talents, skills and vocations expand our reach and impact. Volunteering at TAS is a richly rewarding experience, and we do our best to accommodate your interests and availability.

Whether planting native flora at our Steinberg Nature Center grounds, guiding bird walks, assisting at events or lending administrative, advocating for South Florida’s ecosystems, writing, editing or PR skills, volunteering your time and expertise enhances quality of life for South Florida’s birds, other wildlife and people, too!

Dig in at Bird-friendy Gardening Days: Help TAS restore and steward our near-native Steinberg Nature Center grounds, which include our Bird-friendly Demonstration Garden and our pine rockland and tropical hardwood hammock, located at our main campus.

The Bird-friendly Demonstration Garden is designed to teach Miami-Dade County residents how to recreate habitat and attract wildlife to yards and patios. Learn about native pollinator plants and the birds, bees, butterflies, bats and beetles that they attract.

Dig in at our ¼-acre pine rockland parcel by helping remove non-native and/or invasive plant species and maintain trails. Efforts to preserve remaining acres are vital because less than 2 percent of the globally imperiled pine rockland habitat remain in Miami-Dade County outside of Everglades National Park.

Bird-friendly Gardening Days take place from 9am. until noon on the 3rd Saturday of each month. We welcome service clubs, ecology classes, corporations and private work parties of 10 volunteers or more. Advance reservations are required: volunteer@tropicalaudubon.org

Where: TAS/Steinberg Nature Center, 5530 Sunset Dr., Miami, FL 33143

Field Trip Guide

21SEP2019_TAS_BirdWalk_MathesonHammock (19 of 130).jpg

Become a field trip guide! TAS offers the community a diverse lineup of field trip outings and programs of every feather, including: bird, butterfly and plant trips, morning forays, all-day adventures, overnight trips, local outings and expeditions far afield. We host birding trips year-round with our weekly bird walks and visits to local parks, most during the dry season, while national and international trips are scheduled throughout the year. These activities draw anywhere from a few birders to a few dozen per trip.

Field trip guides are expected to become very familiar with the birding locations where they wish to lead field trips. This includes a knowledge of what birds to expect there at the time of year when their field trip is scheduled, as well as an ability to identify those birds by sight and sound, and get participants “on” the bird.

In addition, they should be familiar with the location layout, including how much walking is involved, whether the location is handicap-accessible and where restrooms are located. Finally, guides need to have a passion for sharing their knowledge about birds and the habitats on which they rely.
