BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Colonel Terrence "Rock" Salt, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Ret., received the Everglades Coalition “Everglades Hall of Fame” award on January 26 for his lifetime commitment to Everglades restoration. The Tropical Audubon Society Board of Directors Vice President and Conservation Chair was honored by his conservation colleagues at the Everglades Coalition’s annual awards ceremony held here at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa.

Miami Wilds Stalls as Commissioners Withdraw Proposal in Victory for Endangered Wildlife
Mayor Committed to Rescinding Development Lease Agreement
Miami-Dade County commissioners voted today to withdraw a proposal that would have amended the development lease agreement with Miami Wilds, LLC. Today’s decision stymies plans for a controversial themed water park and retail development that threatens endangered species near Zoo Miami.
During the commission meeting, the county attorney and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed that the administration intends to proceed with rescinding the development lease agreement.

Legal Victory Speeds up Habitat Protection for Endangered Miami Tiger Beetle
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed on April 10, 2023 to finalize critical habitat for endangered Miami tiger beetles by May 8. The announcement marks a legal victory for the Center for Biological Diversity, Miami Blue Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association, and Tropical Audubon Society. These native beetles face devastating habitat loss from unfettered development and sea-level rise.

to DENY application for industrial development!
The Miami-Dade County (MDC) Board of County Commissioners (BCC) is scheduled to vote May 19 on an application to move the Urban Development Boundary (UDB) to accommodate an industrial development on 793 agricultural acres near Biscayne Bay. The “South Dade Logistics and Technology District” (SDLTD), Application CDMP2021000, is proposed for an unsuitable location. It would permanently remove valuable agricultural land to make way for industrial land that will encourage sprawl. Tropical Audubon and our conservation partners are urging the public to attend the MDC BCC meeting on May 19 to voice opposition to the project or write to their Commissioner and urge them to deny application CDMP20210003. Residents can personalize a letter using our one-click Action Alert and explain to their Commissioner why it is crucial to stop this proposed industrial development!

Audubon Climate Report clarion call: 389 Bird Species on the Brink
National Audubon Society released a groundbreaking climate report today titled Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink. As a result of climate change, two-thirds of America’s bird species are threatened with extinction. The report concludes, that there is still time to save up to 75 percent of these at-risk species if action is taken.
Ask U.S. Army Corps to DENY A Federal Permit to DEGRADE and FILL WETLANDS
The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has extended the public comment period for a Federal Permit to degrade and fill wetlands to accommodate the proposed SR-836 extension outside of Miami-Dade County’s Urban Development Boundary (UDB) and into the Everglades Footprint. The deadline for comments is now until July 26.
