Field Trips

As part of our Birding 101 Program, Tropical Audubon Society provides your choice of field trip at the end of the classroom course. Please let us know as soon as possible which field trip options interest you. Food and transportation are not provided for field trips.

Steinberg Nature Center

The Steinberg Nature Center at Tropical Audubon Society offers a variety of free environmental and historical education programs to schools and other interested groups. Each program begins with a guided tour our headquarters, the Doc Thomas House, and the Steinberg Nature Center grounds, which is home to native Pine Rockland and Hardwood Hammock habitats. Field trip leaders are encouraged to select one or more of the following programs:

Extinction

Where did the Carolina Parakeet go? What happened to the Passenger Pigeon? In this activity, students learn about extinct bird species, how they became extinct, and how people can prevent future extinctions.

Identifying Birds

Birding is one of the world’s most popular hobbies and a great way to enjoy the outdoors! In this program, students put their newly learned skills to the test with interactive bird identification activities and bird watching.

Each activity takes about 1 hour so please plan accordingly.

Adaptation (Eat Like a Bird)

In this activity, students will learn about four local bird species and explore how each has adapted to live in the habitats they call home. Students then take on the role of each bird and will discover why herons have long legs and hummingbirds have long beaks.

The Pioneer Challenge

The Pioneer Challenge gives students a chance to learn how early pioneers lived in South Florida about 150 years ago. How did pioneers protect their homes from Florida panthers? Where does arrowroot flour come from and can you use it to make cookies? Students will be given a series of challenges and resolve them using pioneer knowledge.
