Accessible Inclusive Birding

  • Crandon Park 6747 Crandon Blvd Key Biscayne, FL, 33149 United States (map)

Kirsten Hines will lead this half-day trip at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. This outing is designed for beginning birders, particularly families with small children or strollers, people in wheelchairs, or others with mobility concerns. The Gardens at Crandon Park is wheelchair accessible.

Enter the park via the South Beach entrance. Meet at 8:00am at the main entry gate of Crandon Gardens (the original location of the Miami zoo) at the south end of the park (GPS: 25.705931, -80.156577). This site has accessible parking, restrooms, well-spaced benches, and wide, paved trails that are mostly flat with the exception of a gentle slope to and from an optional elevated loop at the far end of the Gardens. A variety of water birds, peacocks, and a family of resident sandhill cranes can easily be viewed from the trail, as well as blue jays, grackles, cardinals, flycatchers, wintering warblers and other songbirds in more densely treed sections. A limited number of binoculars will be available for loan, but many of the birds here can be seen even without them. The pace will be slow, taking time to listen to and observe the birds and their behaviors while learning to identify different types of birds. Please feel free to contact trip leader Kirsten Hines at KirstenNatureTravel@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

Costs include a $7 parking fee (payable using PayByPhone) and the Rickenbacker Causeway toll (SunPass).
