Join TAS Field Trip Coordinator Brian Rapoza and a local guide (arranged through Holbrook Travel) on a 10-day birding adventure in the Choco region of northwestern Ecuador. During this tour, we’ll experience cloud forest, rainforest and páramo habitat on both the eastern and western slopes of the Andes Mountains, seeking out as many of the country’s 1,640-plus species as possible. Giant and Sword-billed Hummingbird, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Andean Condor, Toucan Barbet, Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, Giant Antpitta, Long-wattled Umbrellabird and Andean Cock-of-the-rock are just a few of the many spectacular birds we’ll target.
The tour begins and ends in Quito, Ecuador’s capital. We’ll spend four days in the Mindo area on the western slope of the Andes, where we’ll visit several iconic birding destinations, including Yanacocha Biological Reserve, Alambi Cloud Forest Reserve, Milpe Bird Sanctuary, Mashpi-Amagusa Reserve, Rio Silanche and Paz de la Aves. Returning to Quito, we’ll explore Antisana National Park before descending the Andes’ eastern slope to the San Isidro and Guango Lodge areas for the last three days of the tour.
